What is Further Maths?
Further Mathematics is an additional A-level taken alongside A-level Mathematics. It extends and deepens mathematical knowledge.
Why Study Further Maths?
It offers a chance to explore advanced mathematical concepts and introduces new areas beyond the standard A-level Maths curriculum.
Who Should Study This?
Ideal for students with a strong interest in maths and those aiming for careers or university courses in mathematical fields.
What Are Lessons Like?
Lessons start with reviews of previous topics, then introduce new concepts through problem-solving and discussion. You’ll need to work independently outside of class to reinforce your learning.
What Will I Study and How Is It Assessed?
– Year 12: Complete the A-level Maths curriculum and begin Further Maths topics.
– Year 13: Finish Further Maths content and sit for exams. Assessment includes three 2-hour Maths exams and four 1.5-hour Further Maths exams.
Further Maths Modules:
– Core Pure 1 & 2: Covers complex numbers, polar coordinates, matrices, and hyperbolic trigonometry.
– Elective Options:
– Further Pure: Explores advanced techniques and conic sections.
– Further Mechanics: Examines collisions and circular motion.
– Further Statistics: Uses expanded distributions for diverse scenarios.
– Further Decision: Focuses on optimisation problems like shortest paths and efficient resource use.
