Physics investigates the nature and properties of matter and energy, including mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, magnetism, and atomic structure. This A-level course explores fundamental principles and cutting-edge developments, such as those from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which are transforming our understanding of the universe and advancing technology.

Why Study Physics?

Physics covers a broad spectrum of exciting topics, from fundamental particles to cosmic phenomena. It drives significant advances in science and technology and develops crucial problem-solving and analytical skills. These skills are highly valued in a variety of well-paid careers.

Who Should Enrol?

The course is ideal for students intrigued by the universe and keen to explore it through mathematical models and experimental methods.

Course Structure and Expectations

Lessons involve studying new concepts and applying them to real-world problems. Independent study and problem-solving are key components. The practical aspect includes sixteen required practicals and additional experiments, such as analysing momentum, measuring light wavelengths with lasers, constructing temperature sensing circuits, and exploring resonance.

What Will You Study and How is it Assessed?

First Year:

– Mechanics (forces, energy, and motion)

– DC Electricity (circuits and sensing devices)

– Solid Materials and Fluids

– Waves (classical and modern Physics)

– Particle Nature of Light (relativity and quantum mechanics)

Second Year:

– Electric, Magnetic, and Gravitational Fields

– Nuclear and Particle Physics

– Thermal Physics and Space (including stars)

– Oscillations

Assessment includes three exams at the end of the course, with practical skills evaluated through the required practical work.

Career Prospects

A Physics qualification opens doors to high-paying careers in engineering, nuclear physics, material science, and medical physics.

Co-curricular Activities and Trips

– Competing in the British Physics Olympiad

– University visits for experimental work

Student Feedback

“It helps you realise how the world really works.”
