The Extended Project

The Extended Project Qualification

Summary

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a fantastic opportunity for students at Chapeltown Academy. Whatever your A-Level combination, the EPQ is an optional course designed to develop independent learning, analytical research and project management skills. It is recognised by universities and employers alike.

In the EPQ you choose a topic on anything which interests you. This allows you to identify a passion and then explore it. Recent topics have been as diverse as ‘veganism and dentistry’, ‘plastics in fish and chips’, ‘predictions of volcanic eruptions’, ‘war crimes prevention’, ‘1920s French cinema’ and ‘feminism and Disney princesses’! You also have options on what you produce. Some students develop university-style dissertations, whilst others have produced musical pieces, fashion shows, dramatic performances, sports events and apps.

The Course and Its Structure

The aim of the EPQ is to learn research skills. You take control of the project throughout – from conception to production and all the research stages in between. You devise and engage with a research question, setting the study within wider research that has already been done. Then you plan and implement a research strategy (such as carrying out interviews or observations, or exploring news, data, studies, films and documentaries), before finally presenting your research findings. Emphasis is placed throughout on self-evaluation.

You are allocated an EPQ Supervisor who will meet with you regularly to support your progress. You also receive an extensive research training programme. The EPQ takes approximately one year and runs in the second part of Y12 into Y13. stages in between. Eligibility

The EPQ is available to all students at the Academy. You do not need to have made a decision on undertaking the EPQ immediately, but you could indicate an interest in your application and at interview. The EPQ would be useful for students who are looking to develop skills in time management and independent research. It also has value for those who wish to focus in on a future career plan, for those who wish to boost their grades, and above all for those who wish to develop a personal interest.
